Trafo Electric Pvt. Ltd. manufactures Power & Distribution Transformers. The factory (originally called J B Electricals) started production in 1974. At that time the unit was mainly dependent on BSES( Bombay Suburban Electric Supply, now Reliance Energy Ltd.) for orders. J B Electricals also had State Electricity Board as their customers.
Trafo Electric took over this unit in 1984. In the year 1988 Trafo entered into technical and marketing tie-up with M/s.Crompton Greaves under which Trafo Electric manufactured Transformers as per the design and technical know how of Crompton Greaves Ltd. The Transformers were marketed by Cromptons all over India under the brand name “Crompton Greaves”. The arrangement went on for Five years until Cromptons decided to set up their own unit for smaller range of Transformers.
Trafo Electric then undertook the task of setting up of a marketing network all over India. Trafo was so far operating on very thin margin & it had not yet created enough reserves to set-up its own offices. Hence, Agents were appointed in major cities and Resident Representatives were appointed in smaller towns.
Trafo found it difficult to match the ridiculously low prices bid by a large number of transformer manufacturers in the Electricity Board tenders. Hence, Trafo decided to enter into an arrangement similar to that it had with Crompton Greaves. Trafo entered into an arrangement with Kirloskar Power Equipment Ltd. The arrangement went on for a year and ended due to poor margins. Subsequently Trafo decided to manufacture and market on its own.
